KUALA LUMPUR - Online pranksters can't seem to get enough of impersonating VIPs on the social networking website Facebook.

The latest VIPs to fall victim to these pranks were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan.

A check by the New Straits Times revealed a page disguised as the premier's, under the name "Najib Tun Razak", followed by a nickname "DAP Wong".

The prime minister has a Facebook account but it is under the name Najib Razak.

The fake page, which has a mugshot of the prime minister, has 3,545 people in its friends list.

In most cases of politicians or VIPs having Facebook accounts, fans are supposed to click on the "Like" button on the VIPs' page to enable them to follow the leaders' online updates.

However, in the case of fake pages set up by impersonators, the only button available is "Become a friend", to give an impression that the VIPs themselves owned the accounts.

It is believed that the prankster running this hoax account could be a teenager or a college student, judging by the name of a school in his "Like" list, and also the large number of youngsters in his friends list.

Among the affiliations listed was the "Justin Bieber Malaysia Fanpage". Also in the list were some unsuspecting foreigners who were misled into thinking the page was genuinely Najib's.

Musa, who does not own a Facebook account, on the other hand, has seven accounts set up by pranksters.

The "Tan Sri Musa Hassan" page bears his mugshot and lists him as having political affiliations with Umno.

It also has a 22-strong list of very "unlikely" friends that the top cop is likely to have -- most of whom are college students.

A source from the Federal Police Commercial Crime Investigation Department said the two pages were under probe.

"The fake page under the IGP's name was set up about a month ago, and we found that there were at least seven Facebook accounts set up by people impersonating him or as tribute to him.

"Our cyber crime unit has been notified and we will trace the pranksters," said the source, adding that several other VIPS had also fallen victims to such pranksters in Facebook.

Recently, Johor police arrested two men who impersonated the Tunku Mahkota Johor, Tunku Ismail Ibrahim, on Facebook.

The men were picked up at a house in Taman Seri Majidee, Johor Baru, about 1.30pm on Tuesday.
