IF YOU think you're used to this Orchard Road streetscape, look again.

It won't look the same from Tuesday, when the current exit of Orchard MRT station is permanently sealed and eventually demolished.

In its place will be a slick, new entrance-exit linked to the new mall ION Orchard.

Commuters will be emerging from this new exit, to get out onto Orchard Road.

If you're early on Tuesday, you might even be able to catch a free cup or fruit juice on your way out.

The more than 100,000 commuters entering and exiting every day will also be walking through the largest LED walls in Singapore - covering more than 90 metres across in length.

Currently the only 'surround' LED walls here, light displays can be programmed with different colours and visual patterns to create a certain mood and even for festive occasions.

It will also be a dynamic visual backdrop to advertising graphics, as well as an art gallery from time to time.

These LED walls will be consistently seen at parts of ION Orchard's facade when it's completed in December.

'Aesthetics, comfort and convenience guide us in the design of our mall, as has been the case for this new MRT entrance-cum exit,' said Ms Soon Su Lin, CEO of Orchard Turn Devleopments.

'When ION Orchard is completed, shoppers can expect a seamless and convenient access to the mall by train, car and public road transport and direct connectivity to adjacent and nearby buildings.'

ION Orchard is the retail component of Orchard Turn's retail-cum-super-residential development jointly owned by CapitaLand and Sun Hung Kai Properties.

It opens for business in spring 2009.

The new exit redirects human traffic to the new development, as it's linked to the passageway.

It leads outdoors to a 117-metre long walkway stretching to Wisma Atria and Ngee Ann City.

The walkway be fully covered in two weeks' time, with construction commencing only after MRT operating hours.

In fact, the existing MRT exit will be shut down due to ongoing construction of ION Orchard, and to facilitate the completion of the covered walkway.

Don't be surprised if you're greeted by ION Orchard's suave male models in bow-ties - they will be your ushers enroute to the new exit, along with SMRT staff.

To reduce inconvenience to passengers, signs will be situated inside Orchard MRT station and displayed on plasma screens across all stations.

The new exit opens out to the upper side of Orchard Road, closer to Wheelock Place and Tangs.

Apart from the new exit opening on Tuesday, the current South entrance of the station will be enhanced later this year.

By the time ION Orchard is completed, there will be two new entrance-exits. One will be at Wheelock Place, while the other will be facing Wisma Atria.

On top of that, the direct link from the MRT station to Wisma Atria will be reopened, so shoppers can expect to access a network of malls soon.

'I don't believe in a sedentary retirement': MM Lee:

"Not everyone can work by sitting in a comfortable office with secretaries bringing docu for u to see and sign.
Not everyone can work past 70, let alone 80. Even if one is fit physically, mentally it may not. Imagine a forgetful 75 yr dealing with cash as cashier?"
