The budget for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) has surpassed original estimates of US$75 million ($104 million) by more than three times - to about $387 million.
This was revealed by Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports Niam Chiang Meng. The 13-day Games will take place from August 14-26.
Mr Niam also pointed out that the benefits would still continue to outweigh the increased cost.
Over 70 per cent of the budget, or about $260 million, comprise contracts awarded to local companies. In addition, the YOG is also expected to attract some 40,000 foreign visitors, giving local tourism a big boost - to the tune of an estimated $57 million in revenue.
