HE BUILT up a collection of over 140 books and VCDs - nearly all Disney titles - in just one year.
But they were all stolen loot, from a series of thefts from libraries and bookshops islandwide.
Pang Hee Phoo, 19, an Institute of Technical Education student, ended up in a district court on Friday.
But his lawyer convinced District Judge Victor Yeo to give his client a second chance and put him on probation instead of a jail term.
The district court heard how Pang's stealing spree came to an end on Jan 27 this year when he was caught.
Pang had gone to a Funan IT Mall bookshop in North Bridge Road at about 5 pm that day.
A staff member, who found him acting suspiciously, tailed him. Unaware of this, Pang put an assortment of books including sticker books and children books into his sling bag.
He then tried to walk out of the store without paying for them and was immediately stopped by the employee.
A search of the bag uncovered over $100 worth of books taken from the shop.
After his arrest, investigations revealed that Pang had done the same at various bookshops and libraries in Bishan, Changi and Jurong for over a year, stealing over $8,000 worth of books.
In his mitigation, Pang's lawyer, Mr Chia Kok Seng, pleaded for leniency.
