INSTILLING student discipline has become a money-making business at SMK Jinjang in Kuala Lumpur. Students are fined for flouting the rules.
China Press highlighted the rules set by the school in its front page yesterday. Students turning up with hair gel would have to pay RM1 to buy a packet of shampoo from the school to wash their hair there and then.
Boys with hair deemed too long will have to pay RM5 for a hair cut by their discipline teacher, while girls need to fork out RM1 for either a hairclip or rubber bands to keep their locks in place.
"Schoolboys who turn up unshaven will have to pay RM2 for a disposable razor from the school to trim their facial hair with," the daily said.
Students without a nametag or school badge will find themselves RM1 poorer, as they are required to buy a sticker or badge as replacement for the day.
Students wearing belts, socks or spectacles that do meet the requirements of the school will have these items seized.
Those who bring mobile phones to school will have their phones seized and fined RM20 to RM100, depending on past transgressions.
Deputy Education Minister Dr Wee Ka Siong said parents who were unhappy with the rules and regulations could voice their opinions at parent-teacher association meetings.
"The Education Ministry has its set of guidelines for setting rules at schools, but every school also has the right to set its own rules," he said.
