When questioned by Shin Min Daily News, the school's principal said that the boy's medical condition was not the reason for his expulsion.
The boy had reportedly been counseled many times over disciplinary problems.
The school had also arranged for two teachers to help the boy with school matters – one before he was officially diagnosed with ADHD and another one after the diagnosis.
Both teachers were in constant contact with the boy's mother and the three would discuss matters when her son met with any problems.
Said the principal, the school had done its best in trying to help the boy improve his conduct, but to no avail.
The principal also added that the school had spoken nicely to the boy on the day of the incident, asking him to face the matter calmly. However, the boy had allegedly lashed out at the teacher thrice with foul language.
The school also told his mother that they were prepared to help her should he want to return to the school or if he wished to apply for a place in a private school.
She has yet to give a reply to the school.
MOE says
According to the Ministry of Education (MOE), new teachers entering the teaching force from Sept 2005 would have to go through a special needs training course, where they are taught to handle children with learning disabilities like ADHD or autism.
By the middle of this year, 1,125 primary school teachers will have completed the course.
In addition, MOE will also despatch a Special Needs Officer to better help students with learning disabilities.
MOE also pointed out that while empathy should be extended to students with ADHD, these students should also obey school rules, just like all other students.
