>NIBONG TEBAL, MALAYSIA - A 110-year-old primary school in Jalan Sungai Daun, here, is in danger of collapse.

Concerned parents of students at Sekolah Kebangsaan Methodist are urging the authorities to take immediate action to ensure the safety of their children. The school has about 600 students.

An inspection by the Public Works Department two months ago showed that the structure of a block of the single-storey building was unsafe for use due to termites.

Since then, the school administration has vacated a resource room, a living-skills room, an operations room and five classrooms of Years One, Two and Five pupils.

The pupils of the five classes have since been placed in the school hall, canteen and laboratory.

The school's parent-teacher association chairman, Idris Hasan said the government should provide funds to build a new school block.

"It is going to cost between RM3 million and RM4 million and we don't think we can raise that much money.

"It is unsafe to allow students to move around the school compound."

Idris said the problem had been highlighted many times but to no avail.

Meanwhile, PTA committee member V. Ananthan, 45, said the school authorities and the Education Department should find a solution to the problem.

Headmaster M. Loganathan refused to comment on the matter.
