Holiday classes show that the school cares
Thu, May 29, 2008
my paper

I refer to the letter "Holiday classes - something wrong with system" (my paper, May 27).

It appears that some parents do not expect their children's schools to conduct any classes during the school holidays.

However, this may not be in the interest of the students, especially the weaker ones who need extra help.

It is good to appraise the principal and teachers according to the students' performance, as the school will then be motivated to ensure that its students perform well.

School holidays are a time for reflection. If the students have put in their due effort during term time, have a good grasp of their work and perform well, then they deserve a break during the school holidays.

However, they should also use the break to hone further their skills and knowledge to do even better.

For those who have not done well during term time, school holidays are a time for catching up.

We should appreciate the schools' effort in organising classes during the holidays to help these students, who may have difficulty studying on their own, without the help of structured classes.

Besides, it will be irresponsible of parents to insist on taking their children - who have not done well in their studies - for an overseas vacation and, at the same time, insist that schools should not run classes for their children during the holidays.

So, parents, please be grateful if your children have to attend classes during the school holidays.

It shows that the school does care about their future.
