More scholarships are being dangled to lure students, even at Secondary 3 level, to get smitten by the science research bug.
The Agency for Science, Technology and Research announced two new scholarship programmes - for upper secondary students and PhD graduates - at its scholarship presentation ceremony on Friday.
The agency, which drives the national scientific research effort here, has at least six scholarship programmes to encourage more people in Singapore to pursue science research as a career.
A strong local research stable is seen by local and foreign scientists as key to the long-term success of Singapore's ambition to be a biomedical sciences stronghold.
But a career in research is traditionally eschewed by the young and ambitious, who find it boring and slow to reap financial returns. So scholarships to fund studies and provide allowances are seen as a carrot to attract more to the laboratories.
