Raffles Institution wins again

By Geraldine Haruka Ling

For the third year running, Raffles Institution (RI) has won the championship title at the National Science Challenge, beating runners-up Raffles Girls' School and River Valley High School.

The winning team of five secondary three students had to pit their skills against 54 other teams in quizzes and tackle science challenges over seven weeks.

One of their tasks in the final face-off was to present a 75-second show-and-tell item explaining the future of solar energy in Singapore after an eye-opening visit to the new NTU-Bosch Photovoltaics laboratory.

"The experience of going through this competition has been an exhilarating one. Not only have we learnt more interesting science facts from the visits, we have also formed friendships with our peers from other schools," said Matthew Lee, one of the members from the winning team.

Each member of the winning team received a laptop each from guest-of-honour Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Senior Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Education.

Previous winners of the National Science Challenge include Swiss Cottage Secondary School and Raffles Girls' School.

What is the National Science Challenge?
Launched in 2004, the National Science Challenge aims to promote science among students and the local public.

The national schools science competition provides a fun and informal learning experience for the participants and promotes science education.

Jointly organised by the A*STAR and the Science Centre Singapore, with support from the Ministry of Education, the National Science Challenge is one of the highlights of Singapore's largest science festival, science.08.
