Kids advertise the 'magic' in them
>KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - It's unusual for a 14-year-old to use his school holidays for studying. But for Eugine Kok, the two days that he sacrificed to learn about advertising will be well worth it.

The Form Two student of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Dato Onn in Butterworth is looking forward for a better understanding of his favourite subject outside class.

He was one of the participants of the Young Apprentice Series (Advertising) workshop at Balai Berita yesterday.

Thirty-nine of his peers joined him in the workshop, which is part of the Newspaper-in-Education (NIE) hands-on school holiday programme organised by the New Straits Times Press.

The advertising enthusiast was stunned when told that his group would be competing to create a real-life advertisement for Mega Kids, an after-school outlet where children can gather to have fun.

"There is a big difference here at the NIE compared to learning in classrooms.

"There was more to do than just reading and writing. Now I get to pursue my interests while having fun as well."

As for the Magic of Speech workshop, about 60 participants learned about public speaking techniques.

Dinah Khairuddin, 11, described the workshop as worthwhile and exciting as she learned new words.

The budding songwriter said her vocabulary had expanded and she could not wait to use the new words that she had learnt.

Tarani Seran, 7, who was at the Creative Me workshop, was glad to attend as she would have otherwise just stayed at home watching television.

"It's fun and I am making new friends," she said.

The workshops will be conducted until Dec 21.
