'They lack the Asian identity.'

MR KHOO LIH-HAN: 'Our three local universities are unique in themselves and provide excellent education and research work.

However, they all lack the Asian flavour or identity.

How do our universities differ from those in the United States or Britain?

Many of our programmes are modelled after the US and British institutions.

When I see exchange students coming to Singapore, I always wonder what unique features of our universities they will remember.

I guess it's often the students they remember. But, the system does not leave a lasting impression on them.

I urge the committee setting up the fourth university to create an identity for it and incorporate an Asian flavour to create that unique difference.'
