ALOR STAR, MALAYSIA: A Form Five student has claimed that he suffered serious injury in his right ear after he was slapped several times by a disciplinary teacher.
The incident allegedly took place at his school in Kuala Nerang, about 40km from here, last Monday morning.
Mohd Syazmal Yusof, 17, when met at his house in Kuala Nerang yesterday, said a doctor from the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital who treated him stated that the eardrum in his right ear was injured, causing him to lose his hearing.
He said that on the day of the incident, he was called by the male teacher after he was involved in a fight with another student.
"I did not say anything when the teacher questioned me.
"This upset him. Suddenly, he slapped me on the cheeks with both of his hands. I nearly fell down.
"The impact was hard on my right ear and since that day I have been having sleepless nights and I cannot hear properly in that ear," he said, adding that the other student was also slapped by the teacher.
He said they were both sent to the Kuala Nerang police station on the same day for the police to investigate the fight.
His father, Yusof Ahmad, 47, who lodged a police report last Wednesday, said he was upset with the teacher's action.
"I don't mind if the teacher acted to discipline my son as long as it didn't cause serious injuries.
"Maybe a rotan (cane) would do. But this was too much, and my son was traumatised by the incident."
He said he lodged the police report as he was not satisfied with the teacher's explanation.
"I went to see the teacher but he didn't seem to regret it at all.
"He didn't even apologise," added Yusof, who is considering legal action against the teacher.
Padang Terap district police chief DSP Ku Yaacob Ku Hamad confirmed that police received the report but declined comment.
Officials from the school and the state education department were not available for comment.
