Clarify GCE maths exam instructions
Fri, Oct 09, 2009
my paper

IN THE instructions for the GCE O-level mathematics paper, it says that "If the degree of accuracy is not specified in the question, and if the answer is not exact, give the answer to three significant figures."

However, students get confused when it comes to questions involving currency.

Some are penalised for giving an answer to three significant figures, as their teachers expect it to be rounded off to two decimal places.

For example, a calculated value of $12,345.6789 should be given as $12,300, according to the instructions.

However, some teachers would expect the answer to be given as $12,345.68.

Which is correct? If it is the latter, then the instructions should be amended to reflect that.

Could the Ministry of Education clarify the matter?
