Thai primary-school students won two gold medals and 30 other medals at an international mathematics competition in India, a senior Education Ministry official said yesterday.
Nattanon Tangjittham from Ayutthaya and Warit Foongwanit from Bangkok's Assumption College won gold medals at the Wizard at Mathematics International Competition 2009 (Wizmic), said Somkiat Chobphol, deputy secretary-general of the Basic Education Commission.
He said Thai schoolchildren also won 10 silvers and four bronzes in individual contests, and 16 other silver medals in team competition.
"The BEC congratulates the Thai students, who have shown their capability in the international competition. In addition to bringing fame and pride to themselves, their families and the country, the students have also made new friends from other countries and expanded their vision," Somkiat said.
Primary-school students from seven countries - Bulgaria, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Nepal, Thailand and Zimbabwe - took part in the contest, which ends today.
The Thai students are scheduled to arrive at Suvarnabhumi Airport this evening.
