An academic in Oxford University has pledged to donate 10 per cent of his annual salary, plus any yearly earnings above 20,000 pounds (S$45,942), reported Australian news website news.com.au.
The 30-year-old Australian, Dr Toby Ord, was quoted as saying:"My student years were not extravagant, but were immensely enjoyable, with the chief enjoyments such as reading beautiful books and spending time with my wife and friends costing almost nothing,"
Dr Ord reckons that if he lives like a student, he should be able to give away around one million pounds.
He says spending the income he gets now on holidays, iPhones and eating out at expensive restaurants 'would be nice but not all that much better', compared to a more modest lifestyle.
Dr Ord has also launched a society called 'Giving what we can', where members of the public can make a pledge to donate 10 per cent of their salary to organisations they think can best use the money to help fight poverty in the developing world.
He says his pledge has given him more purpose in life, and that "once you get used to the idea, it is actually not much of a burden."
