Daughter enjoys Chinese, thanks to Pri 1 teacher

my paper

I REFER to the report, "Be flexible in teaching Chinese, says Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew" (my paper, Nov 18).

I would like to share my daughter's experience with learning Chinese.

She is a Primary 1 pupil in class 1G at Singapore Chinese Girls' School.

My daughter hated Chinese lessons during her four years in preschool.

I thought that was only natural for a child who spoke only English at home.

To my surprise, when she started school this year, I did not hear any complaints about her Chinese lessons.

She even told me that Chinese is her favourite subject.

I am happy that she has overcome the greatest obstacle which plagued her in her years of early-childhood education.

I hope someone would be able to study the methods my daughter's Chinese teacher is using, as she seems to have a formula to get even the most reluctant pupils interested in the language.

Mr Roger Lau
