Bring only what's necessary

Teachers should urge primary school pupils to bring only the books they need for the following day's lessons to ensure their school bags are not too heavy.

Education director-general Tan Sri Alimuddin Mohd Dom said this meant that pupils should make it a point not to bring books that they did not need or use.

"The issue of heavy school bags should not arise if pupils only bring the books needed according to the timetable," he said.

He advised parents to help their children by looking at the timetable and packing the school bags accordingly.

On whether lockers could be provided for pupils to keep their books, he said there were no plans to do so.
