PETALING JAYA: She thought she would be safe in a crowded area, but Koong Siew Lee was wrong.

The 56-year-old hawker was beaten up, scratched and given several jabs of electrical shocks by a group of loan sharks in public view.

"This is the most vicious attack I have ever encountered where the Ah Long have no qualms in bashing an old lady," said MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Michael Chong at a press conference yesterday.

Koong, a divorcee from Puchong, had borrowed RM1,500 from a loan shark named Ah Loong last August and another RM600 from another loan shark identified only as Kelvin in November. She needed the money to finance her noodle stall.

Although Koong managed to repay RM1,500 to Ah Loong and RM525 to Kelvin, she failed to meet her Dec 31 deadline to pay the remaining dues.

"I cannot find enough money to settle the debts," she said.

Koong said she tried to negotiate with the two men for more time and lesser interest to settle her debts but they bashed her up instead.

"They told me that I now owe them RM4,000."

She said she met and negotiated with them at an open-air food court in Tan Yew Lai Garden, Puchong, but the meeting turned rowdy when the two men and their friend assaulted her. The incident occurred at 6pm on Monday in the crowded food court.

She claimed the men hit her with a beer bottle, scratched her chest with a bottle opener and caned her with a walking stick.

"They also used an electric probe to shock me several times. There were many people there but nobody helped me.

"I thought meeting them in a public place would be safe and they would not dare harm me but I was wrong."

Koong's sister Siew Mi has lodged a police report on her behalf. Yesterday, both of them turned to Chong for help.
