MALACCA: Police have detained a 21-year-old construction worker from Myanmar who tried to run away with a 13-year-old girl in Penang.

The man was said to have tried to coax the girl into following him while she was on her way to attend a Quran class last Thursday.

Melaka Tengah OCPD ASP Johari Yahya said police received a call at noon yesterday that the man was seen around the Melaka Sentral bus station.

A team led by C/Insp V. Gunasegaran went to the station and arrested the man.

ASP Johari said the man did not resist arrest as he was taken by surprise.

He said the man wanted to go to Johor after staying in Malacca for two days. A bus ticket to Mersing was found on him.

The girl's father had lodged a report after he found her returning home several hours late.

The girl was said to have outsmarted the man by telling him she needed to go back to collect her identification papers.

The man, who did not suspect anything, waited for her to return at the Butterworth bus terminal but she went to her sister's shop and later returned home.
