LOS ANGELES - AUTHORITIES have arrested a Japanese man wanted in the 1981 murder of his wife in Los Angeles, a decade after he was acquitted of the crime by a Japanese high court, United States police said.

Kazuyoshi Miura, 60, was arrested on Friday in the Island of Saipan, a US Pacific territory, on a warrant charging him with the murder of his wife Kazumi, the Los Angeles police department said in a statement on Saturday.

Kazumi was 28 years old when she was shot in downtown Los Angeles on Nov 18, 1981. She died more than a year later in Japan.

Her husband was sentenced by the Tokyo district court to life in prison for the murder in 1994, but the Tokyo High Court overturned the verdict and acquitted him four years later.

He was arrested at Saipan's airport on Friday.

'A murder suspect who has been eluding dragnet has finally been captured,' the LAPD said in a statement.

Los Angeles detectives 'have been closely working with authorities in Guam and Saipan, believing that Miura would be visiting the island from his residence in Japan', the statement said.

His extradition from Saipan is pending, the police said. -- AFP
