TOKYO - JAPANESE police said they arrested a man on Thursday after an officer was injured by a knife during a scuffle in the high-tech district of Akihabara, the scene of a recent stabbing frenzy.
Police have been on alert following a series of copycat crime threats after the knifing rampage by a 25-year-old man in Akihabara on June 8.
Security is also being stepped up ahead of a summit of the leaders of the Group of Eight rich nations in northern Japan early next month.
Police in Akihabara, a high-tech and alternative culture district, arrested the man on charges of injuring a police officer and obstructing public duties, a Tokyo police spokesman said.
The man has not yet been identified but appeared to be in his early 20s, he said.
Police questioned the man in the street and found a knife in his backpack, the official said. Local reports said the knife had a 7.5-centimetre blade.
'It was not like he was wielding the knife but a police officer sustained a cut during a scuffle to try to wrest the knife away from him,' the spokesman said.
Police are seeking murder charges against Tomohiro Kato over the June 8 rampage in Akihabara during which a truck was rammed into pedestrians and shoppers were randomly slashed with a dagger. Seven people were killed.
Mr Kato had sent dozens of phone messages outlining his plans as he drove the truck to the scene of the crime. -- AFP
