Moderate quake strikes off Indonesia's Java
Sun, Jul 20, 2008

JAKARTA - A 5.9-MAGNITUDE earthquake struck off Indonesia's main island of Java on Sunday, but there was no threat of a tsunami and no immediate reports of damage, geologists said.

The quake hit at 0611 GMT (2.11pm Singapore time), 135 kilometres south-east of Wonogiri in Central Java, the Indonesian meteorology and geophysics agency said via text message.

The quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometres, it said.

'There's no reports of damage so far', agency geologist Setiono told AFP, adding that the quake was felt only moderately in several towns in Central Java.

No tsunami alert was issued for the quake, he said.

Indonesia was the nation worst hit by the earthquake-triggered Asian tsunami in December 2004 that killed 168,000 people in the country's Aceh province.

The Indonesian archipelago sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where continental plates meet causing seismic and volcanic activity.
