Pakistani cleaner returns S$68,728 left by guest

He earns a measly pay of 21,000 rupees (S$322.16) per month, but Essa Khan is a man with a heart of gold.

The hotel cleaner in Pakistan found more than US$50,000 (S$68,825) - all in US$100 bills - while cleaning up a room previously occupied by a Japanese guest at the Serena Hotel in Gilgit.

The honest Khan traced back the rightful owner of the money and handed it to him - without getting any reward.

But he received an award from his boss and an invitation to visit Punjab governor Salman Taseer for a special ceremony.

Says Khan: "My duty with the hotel and my family upbringing teaches me nothing else."

"Times are hard for everyone, but that doesn't mean we should start stealing and taking things which do not belong to us."

"I want people around the world to know that there are many good people in Pakistan - everybody is not a terrorist here."
