Japan's benchmark Nikkei average rose 0.22 per cent on Friday, buoyed by hopes of large US interest rate cuts and other policy measures to deal with an economic slowdown.

JFE Holdings Inc and IHI Corp rose after a report in the Nikkei business daily that they may integrate their shipbuilding operations this year.

At 8.06 Singapore time, the Nikkei was up 0.23 per cent at 14,421.51 and the broader Topix index up 0.48 per cent at 1,408.04. -- REUTERS
