LONDON - BRITISH television chef Keith Floyd is in a stable condition in hospital after he collapsed at a pub, a friend said.

Floyd, whose television series have been shown in more than 40 countries, collapsed Tuesday at Chesters pub in Newcastle-under-Lyme, west central England, which is run by his friend Glenn Geldard.

Geldard, who visited him Friday at the nearby University Hospital of North Staffordshire, said Floyd was 'not doing very well' but later on Friday said he heard 'he has stabilised'.

The flamboyant bon viveur, 64, is known for frequent consumption of wine during programmes.

Newspaper reports suggested Floyd collapsed after spending a week drinking whisky following the breakdown of his marriage.

The former army officer's manager Stan Green told the Daily Mail newspaper that Floyd's collapse was the result of exhaustion brought on by six weeks' work at his restaurant on Phuket island, Thailand.

'Everyone knows Keith likes a drink - his favourite tipple is Scotch,' he said.

'But it has never been a problem for him and I doubt whether it is a factor in his collapse.' -- AFP
