The Straits Times

AN EVENING shower had cleared the night sky. But at Victoria Theatre, about 100 invited guests gathered for a party after the Singapore Dance Theatre's (SDT) 20th Anniversary Gala performance last Saturday and there was not a dry eye in the house.

Goh Soo Khim, 64, co-founder of the home-grown ballet company, was reading from a creased piece of paper in a thin, high voice.

She announced that she would be stepping down as artistic director in December after 20 years at the helm.

'I feel, and many would agree, that SDT has come a very long way, in terms of the strength of dancers and the company's extensive repertoire. It is a company that all of us can be very proud of', she said.

Several dancers at the back could not hold back their tears.

Later, she said: 'It is difficult to say goodbye to things you love so much, that you have been involved with for so long. But when the time comes, one has to be able to let go. And I think the time has come for me to do that'.
