Local assistance programme plans to extend its reach

SINGAPORE - Needy families in Pasir Ris - Punggol GRC who were not eligible for any assistance because they did not meet the gross household income have been assisted by four temples and Pasir Ris - Punggol Grassroots Organisations (GROs) by the 'We Care' assistance programme since April 2010.

The programme is supported by the North East Community Development Council (CDC) and has helped over 1,320 needy residents since it started.

It has disbursed about $300,000 to these families to date.

It now hopes to increase its reach to the needy of the North East District. A total of $1.2 million has been set aside for the programme.

The programme which was a grounds-up initiative by Amitabha Buddhist Society, Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple Association, Loyang Tua Pek Kong Temple and Singapore Buddhist Lodge.

Representatives from the temples as well as grassroots leaders and North East CDC representatives will work closely together to decide on how to help the needy residents.
