Boy's toes gets trapped in mall escalator

SINGAPORE - The toes on a boy's right foot were trapped in an escalator at Square 2 in Novena this afternoon.

Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) officers had to dismantle the escalator to free his foot.

It took 45 minutes, and a paramedic comforted the child throughout the process. He was then sent to Kandang Kerbau Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH).

His right foot was injured.

The SCDF dispatched a fire engine, a red rhino, an ambulance, a support vehicle and a Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART) to the scene after receiving a call at 1.39pm.

According to a netizen who wrote in to Stomp under the username Llai, the child looked about four to five years old and seemed to be wearing soft rubber clogs.

In the past five years, there have been reports of children wearing similar footwear getting injured on escalators. The soft material makes the clogs easily crushed when caught in the metallic side panels of escalators.
