MDA directs SingTel to share BPL content with StarHub under cross-carriage rule

Last October, SingTel said it had secured a non-exclusive deal with the Football Association Premier League (FAPL). This means it does not need to share its content with StarHub, which is free to negotiate its own BPL deal. But when attempts to negotiate its own set of rights were repeatedly thwarted, StarHub kicked the matter up to the regulator, alleging foul play and that SingTel's deal was in effect an exclusive one.

According to a latest statement from the Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI) on Wednesday, MCI will be considering the appeal lodged by SingNet against MDA's direction.

SingNet Pte Ltd ("SingNet") has informed the Minister for Communications and Information of its intention to appeal against the Direction issued by the Media Development Authority of Singapore ("MDA") requiring SingNet to cross-carry the Barclays Premier League ("BPL") live matches over the next three seasons, starting from 2013/2014 to 2015/2016.

The Minister for Communications and Information will give due consideration to SingNet's appeal and hear representations from both SingNet and MDA before making a final decision on the appeal.
