WORLD number one Lorena Ochoa will headline the inaugural US$2 million (S$2.8 million) HSBC Women's Champions tournament in Singapore next month, organisers said on Friday.
Mexican Ochoa, who has garnered 17 wins on the LPGA Tour and won the last two Player of the Year awards, said the LPGA-sanctioned event gave her the chance to kick off the 2008 season in style.
'I am excited about playing in Singapore for the first time and I think the HSBC Women's Champions will be a great event on the LPGA Tour,' Ochoa said in a news release.
'I have heard lots of good things about the Garden Course and I am very keen to get my 2008 season off to a strong start so I hope I can put in a good performance next month.'
A 78-strong field, which also includes American Paula Creamer and Norway's Suzann Pettersen, will tee off at the Tanah Merah Country Club from Feb 28 to March 2.
In addition to winners on the 2007 LPGA Tour, champions of events in South Korea and Japan as well as leading money winners in Europe and Australia will qualify to play.
Facing off against the professionals will be 15-year-old Singaporean Amelia Yong, who triumphed in a local qualifying tournament. -- REUTERS
