STTA chief Lee to work with Liu for 2012 Games

FOR THE past few days, table tennis head coach Liu Guodong cut a frustrated figure as his future seemed uncertain.

But, yesterday, Singapore Table Tennis Association president Lee Bee Wah revealed to The Straits Times that she is looking forward to working with Liu in preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games.

The Ang Mo Kio GRC MP said: 'I've considered that Liu Guodong has done a great job with the girls and met the target of a medal at the Olympics.


Coach welcomes positive news about his future

SINGAPORE head coach Liu Guodong reacted with relief yesterday, when informed by The Straits Times that STTA president Lee Bee Wah looked forward to working with him until the 2012 Olympics.

Said the 34-year-old: 'If that is true, then I'm very happy. I will try my best to work with her to bring more success to Singapore.'

Liu, a former coach with the Chinese national team, arrived here in 2006 to oversee both the men's and women's squads.


Gao Ning blames coach and team manager for exit

GAO Ning, the player in the centre of the Singapore table tennis controversy, yesterday slammed the two men he felt were responsible for his sour Beijing Olympics experience.

The world's 12th-ranked player is also frustrated with what he perceived as preferential treatment to the women's team.

He blamed team manager Antony Lee and head coach Liu Guodong for his early third-round exit.


Antony insists his STTA stint runs till 2012

HE WAS supposed to stay until 2012.

So says Antony Lee, the outgoing team manager of the Singapore table tennis squad.

Contrary to reports that his stint with the STTA was due to expire this Sunday, Lee said he was supposed to take charge of the paddlers until after the London Olympics.
