Winner of 10KM+Vertical Climb (OMB Challenge) Men's Open Ang Chee Yong (extreme left), first runner up Foo Gen Lin (centre) and winner of General 10KM Competitive Run Men's Open Fang Jianyong (right).

A record number of 5,440 participants turned up bright and early Sunday morning for NTUC Club's U Run.

Starting and finishing at The Float@Marina Bay, the 10KM + Vertical Climb runners were flagged off at 7am. In the Men's Open category, Ang Chee Yong outran 1,878 runners to clinch the top position with a winning time of 40 minutes 55 seconds.

In second place was Foo Gen Lin and in joint third place were Ivan Low and Philip S/O Ramachandran.

Michele Tan placed first for the 10KM + Vertical Climb Women's Open category with a winning time of 51 minutes 6 seconds.

In second place was Stephanie Hulbert, with Carolyn Pryor in third.

Union members were also out in force to compete yesterday. In the Union 10KM + Vertical Climb Men's category, Glen Copsey (Union - AUSBE) finished first - whilst in the Union 10KM + Vertical Climb Women's category, it was Mak Ying Pheng (Union - SISEU) who took top honours.

With registration for the event closing weeks before the official close date due to an overwhelming demand from runners, U Run 2012 was most easily and most competitively contested U Run event to date, said NTUC Club.

Mr Yeo Khee Leng, CEO, NTUC Club was heartened to see not just the runners present but many who woke up early to support their running family members and friends.

"Participating in a running event is a personal challenge, but it can also be a family affair and today we can see just that: families running together, parent and child edging each other on, buddies pacing together. Those bonds between runners are what make U Run what it is today," said Mr Yeo.
