KUALA LUMPUR: A lone thief broke into a textile emporium and got away with RM820,000 in jewellery and cash from a goldsmith shop that shares the ground floor of the outlet.
He gained entry into the emporium located in Jalan Masjid India at 2.30am by cutting the window grille of the men's toilet on the first floor from an empty building next door.
Once inside, he stole RM3,500 from a cash machine located on the same floor, said city police chief Deputy Commissioner (DCP) Datuk Muhammad Sabtu Osman.
The thief, who covered his face with a cloth, then made his way to the ground floor and broke the lock to the goldsmith section.
"He stole the jewellery inside the unlocked cases before finally triggering the alarm at 2.50pm," said DCP Sabtu.
Two security guards stationed outside the emporium heard the alarm, but could not enter until the emporium owner arrived at 3.15am.
"Images from the CCTV recordings were not clear because it was dark inside. We believe he wore gloves while committing the burglary," he said.
DCP Sabtu noted that the emporium was in the midst of renovation and did not rule out an inside job.
He urged anyone with information about the theft to contact the nearest police station.
