GRAND Theft Auto IV, a free-wheeling game where players can hijack a car, pick up a prostitute and kill innocent passers-by, is hitting the shelves on Tuesday, passed under a new rating system announced two weeks ago.
Previous editions of Grand Theft Auto (GTA) were banned here as it glamorised crime, drugs and prostitution.
But under a new rating system that also comes into effect on Tuesday, GTA IV will be put on shelves with an Mature 18 (M18) sticker that warns of mature themes and coarse language.
The game is to be sold only to those 18 and older, and retailers will have to check the age of buyers.
The title had always been expected to pass the cut here, with shops already putting up posters in advance.
But its release is still seen as a step toward a new era where mature gamers will get more choice while the young are protected from objectionable content.
