Cheers to BYOB Day!

I applaud the government's efforts in trying to making Singapore a well-known beautiful city, especially growing that forestful of trees recently.

Personally I am a relatively environmental friendly person. I consider not once but twice each time i throw my rubbish.

At home, i have a small corner for 'recyclable' items like plastic containers, cans, etc which i appreciate people collecting every other Thursday at my doorstep and replacing it with 1 new bag. Whenever i go shopping, i bring my own bags as well.

In light of the BYOB day and MM Lee's article on 'Make this a daily habit', I would like to share my two-cents worth thoughts which both the MOE (Ministry of environment and Ministry of education) and for organisations could consider adopting:-

1) MOE (environment):

i) Providing more recycled bins around and giving proper "instructions or signages" to educate people on what are the right items to dispose so as to prevent rubbish to be disposed in the bins instead. I am currently working in Tanjong Pagar area, i am on the lookout for recycled bins but just couldn't seem to locate one.

ii) Possibly providing information to public where recycled bins/stations are for people to dispose.

iii) Contest; Giving awards to individual/organisations who are green! Be it within the organisations and possibly staff who are able to think of various ways to be environmental friendly.

iv) Any chance of having weekly collection of recycling bags rather than the current fortnightly?

2) MOE(Education):

i) Education starts young and if there could be some 1hr lesson squeezed in during the timetable, teachers could incalcate the right Green values into the minds of young children.,in hope that they would adopt the same practice. And certainly with contests, awards could come in handy to encourage children to follow such practices.

ii) During March,June, Sept and Dec school holidays; Have a day/more time for kids/youngsters (high school and above) to help out at any Green stations

3) Organisations:

i) Having recycled corners in your pantry so staff could dispose recycled items. Having a volunteer to bring it to nearest recycled stations. So this has to tie in with my suggested option (1) (i).

ii) Supporting supermarts: Adopt a 'point-system' whereby customers could get 'chopped' stamp(s) for bringing their own bags. Possibly having a contest for customers who have the most points at the end of a certain month/week.

The above might or mightn't help; However so long every individual contributes one way or another, i am sure we are able to make a difference to saving the earth and keeping the temperatures down.
