Suicide is never a solution
Fri, Nov 20, 2009
my paper

SUICIDE is a serious public-health issue.

People may be driven to kill themselves because of depression, shame, guilt, pain, emotional pressure or anxiety caused by financial or other difficulties.

It affects people of all ages and backgrounds.

Suicide is a selfish act as victims can cause economic hardship and emotional pain to those they leave behind.

Talking to a professional over the phone may be more effective, as some suicidal people may feel intimidated during a face to face meeting.

I applaud volunteers who give their time to man helplines.

Though there are already programmes to help suicidal individuals, it would not hurt to intensify them in schools and tertiary institutions, to drive home the message that suicide is never a solution.
