Dog owners should take courses
Mon, Nov 23, 2009
my paper

I REFER to a report in the press that dog attacks are on the rise. The number of cases has risen to 65 from about 50 in 2006.

The attacking dogs were not confined to dangerous breeds, such as rottweilers and dobermans.

Even smaller breeds such as shih tzus and jack russell terriers have attacked people.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the German Shepherd Dog Club (Singapore) and the Singapore Kennel Club have recommended that all dogs undergo mandatory obedience training.

It is also a dog owner's responsibility to muzzle his dog when it is in public.

Current and potential dog owners should also attend courses on dog behaviour and habits, which would help them better handle their dogs should they turn violent.

The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore should also control the stray-dog population.
