Capello hell-bent on results

FABIO Capello admits he will have no excuses if he fails to get England back to the top of world football.

The Italian names his second squad tomorrow, for the upcoming friendly with France next Wednesday, and knows that he is under intense pressure to deliver results.

While he will undoubtedly be given time to implement fresh ideas into a squad which failed so dismally in their Euro 2008 qualification campaign, the former AC Milan and Juventus boss acknowledges that it is important to show signs of development even at this early stage.

'I know that only results count here, like everywhere else,' Capello told Zoo.

'You must get good results as soon as possible, if you want to avoid criticism.

'You can talk about the formation and who should play, but at the end of the day only the results count. This is my only aim: I want to win.

'You can't do that without good players and a decent game plan. But what makes the difference is scoring one goal more than your opponent.

'Football is a simple game. Some people like talking. I love winning.'

One area which has held the English national team back for years is its inability to adapt to a variety of systems and formations.

Capello admits this is one area he intends to work on and, while he is not expecting to implement wholesale changes, he does hope to develop a more flexible squad once he has a greater knowledge of the players available to him.

'I've always played 4-4-2 and I still think it is the most reliable formation,' he said.

'But I'm also ready to change my mind and adapt the tactical system to the players I have.

'That's the reason I'm travelling all around the country, to watch as many games as I can. I want to improve my knowledge of English football, and all the players, as soon as possible.

'When I feel 100 per cent confident, I'll start thinking about another formation.
