CRISTIANO Ronaldo. Oh yes.

Danny Welbeck? Who?

Despite Ronaldo's two world-class free-kick missiles to help Manchester United to a 5-0 whipping of Stoke City last night, the world will be wanting to find out more about the new kid on the block.

Welbeck, an England youth international who turns 18 on the 26 Nov, came on for Park Ji Sung in the 63rd minute.

But in the 84th minute, he stole the show.

He took the ball on the run, from at least 25 metres out from goal, and ran at the Stoke defence.

At 1.85m, he stands out on the pitch despite his inexperience at the top level.

But there's no substitute for a new kid's lust when thrown onto the pitch with Stoke trailing by three goals.

And so Welbeck raged on, with only Stoke's central defender Abdoulaye Faye back-tracking to try and read his intended moves.

Except that Welbeck, like the bloodthirsty youngster he is, saw the gap from afar, and uncocked his right leg.

He swung it at the ball in full flight, sending the outswinging shot whooshing past Faye.

Full stretch

Stoke goalkeeper and Danish international Thomas Sorensen is no piece of easy meat himself.

So he dived at full stretch to the best of his ability.

But the ball kept swerving away from him, beyond his reach, before thundering into the top left corner of his goal.

The smoke from the ashes were still rising as Welbeck ran towards the byeline to celebrate his true arrival for Man United.

It was arguably, as stunning a strike as Ronaldo's rocket of an opening goal in the third minute.

After a week of League Cup action, where the footballing world was truly introduced to the wondrous homegrown English stars of the future - like Arsenal's Jack Wilshere and Jay Simpson - even Tottenham Hotspur's loaned striker from Man United, Fraizer Campbell, is starting to look like a gem.

And it seemed as if United manager Alex Ferguson himself, wanted to show off his new young talent too, as the likes of Paul Scholes come to the tail-end of their careers.

Whether Welbeck can stay the course at the top level with United, and turn out to be like Arsenal's Theo Walcott, remains to be seen.

Ferguson has likened him to a Nwankwo Kanu-like striker.

His languid style can fool you, as it did the Stoke defence.

Because when he charged at Stoke in that definitive 84th minute, Welbeck announced his intention to become a red-hot Red Devil.
