THE HULK is in town. No, it's not the big, green man-turned-monster who demolishes buildings. Instead, it comes in the form of the friendly Samuel Lim, 26, manager of Team Iron Behemoths. And the only demolishing this business owner is into, is that of records. Nicknamed 'The Hulk' by his circle of friends, Lim and his team-mates from all walks of life, congregate at Hong Lim Park every Saturday to do their 'Strongman Workout'. All with the aim of pushing themselves to their limits and bettering their bests. Strongman is actually a sport. It involves events like lifting huge tyres and pulling Rhinos (trucks, not the actual animals). It isn't exactly a well-known sport here in Singapore. So who better to pull Strongman out of semi-obscurity than Team Iron Behemoths, some of whom are among the 10 strongest men in Singapore. But if you're picturing Team Iron Behemoths to be filled only with muscle-bulging, testosterone-driven young men, then you'd only be half right. There are women on this team. And some of them can even put the men to shame, claimed Lim. Angelina Tan, 29, is one such 'Iron- woman'. She may weigh less than 50kg, but this mild-mannered woman is a force you don't want to reckon with. The personal trainer's pet event is the Sled Pull, and she can pull. Her personal best is a load three times her weight. And contrary to what you're probably thinking, she's not that bulky or as they say in their lingo, 'ripped'. Strongman Tan said: 'With sports like Strongman, you're not going to put on a lot of bulk. In fact, I find your overall metabolism rate goes up, so actually it's a good sport for women who want to maintain their weight.' Lee Zhan Wei, 16, a student, said: 'Strongman is definitely more fun than just going to the gym. There's so much more to do here. In Strongman, I managed to flip a 250kg tyre.' When asked if his Strongman routine helps his chances with the girls, Zhan Wei sheepishly replied: 'I'm into this because I love the sport, but it doesn't hurt that it helps my figure too.' He added: 'I believe anyone can lift 250kg tyres. All you need is the right motivation and training.' And proper motivation and training is exactly what Team Iron Behemoths will provide, said Lim. 'Over here, you get 30 pairs of eyes on you, correcting your flaws and egging you on. And we try to create an atmosphere of friendly competition, where you're going head-to-head with the guy next to you, and you're trying to get one over him.' Team Iron Behemoths also have their own Powerlifting club. 'At Powerlifting training, members choose to do either The Squat, Deadlift or Bench Press, and we guide and watch over them to ensure they're using the proper techniques required,' explained Lim. Team Iron Behemoths promise personal improvement with their overall regime. Lim concluded: 'We're not saying everyone can hit professional standards, but anyone who walks in, can safely expect to walk out stronger.' Warrior Speak SAMUEL Lim, 26, manager of Team Iron Behemoths, on drug use and sponsors. ON DRUGS 'I DO this (Strongman) without drugs, I got to where I am, without it. 'My stand is that we don't need drugs to achieve what we can achieve. 'As for myself, I just use supplements like whey protein, creatine, glutamine, BCAA (branched-chain amino acids) and I eat a lot of meat, like steak. 'So it's all about going natural for me.' ON FINDING SPONSORS 'WE HAVE been using supplements from Nutrifirst, our main sponsor, for a while now and we've found that it works. 'So one day, we decided to approach them and they were kind enough to sponsor us. 'As for Red Army, their watches are tough, rugged but classy. 'So we felt it fit our image perfectly (laughs), and it turned out to be a win-win situation for both parties.'
