MALAYSIAN Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said he was sure Malaysia can produce world champions in golf just like the country has done in squash and badminton.

He said the hosting of golf championships for youths like the TSM Golf Challenge is seen as a platform to scout for golf talent in the country.

'It is not impossible for Malaysia to produce world No. 1 players in golf because the country already has world No. 1 players for squash and badminton who have become the pride of Malaysians,' he said in the championship's souvenir book.

Prestigious

He said the championship, that was recognised by young golf players as a prestigious event, had nearly achieved its objective to see the birth of a Malaysian world golf champion.

Muhyiddin yesterday officiated the fourth edition of the TSM Golf Challenge at Subang National Golf Club in Kelana Jaya.

The three-day championship was inspired by him and carries the theme 'In search of Malaysian Tiger'.

A total of 50 men and 30 women below 21 years of age are taking part in the tournament.

The top prize is a scholarship worth RM40,000 ($16,600) for men and RM20,000 for women to undergo training at selected golf academies overseas.
