COMMENT

HARRY Redknapp can afford a wry smile after Tottenham's 2-0 victory over Sunderland last night.

After all, the Spurs manager had faced criticism over the sale of Darren Bent in the lead-up to this game.

Out of favour at White Hart Lane, the England striker has been in sparkling form for Sunderland this season, scoring eight goals in the process.

And for a minute in the second half last night, the veteran manager had his heart in his throat, as he saw Bent earn a dubious penalty against Heurelho Gomes.

The burly striker tried to go past the Spurs keeper in the 52nd minute, but went to ground with the slightest of touches from the Brazilian.

Spurs dented by Bent - what a headline it would have made.

But justice was served just moments later, as Gomes dived correctly to his left to save Bent's weak penalty.

My missus would have scored that, Redknapp must have been secretly repeating to himself at the touchline, as he famously did last season.

Instead, the penalty and Bent's subsequent miss spurred the home side into an attacking mode, ultimately securing victory in the 68th minute through an exquisite long shot by Tom Huddlestone.

City slip-up

With the victory, Spurs have now leapfrogged over Manchester City into fourth place, after the Citizens were held to a shock 3-3 draw with Burnley.

With the victory, Spurs have kept up their challenge for a spot in the Premiership's Big Four.

And meanwhile, Bent can only twiddle his fingers and share his misery with his fans on Twitter.
