THE Middle East peace process was discussed when Singapore's Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Zainul Abidin Rasheed called on Israeli Acting Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni in Jerusalem on Monday.
Mr Zainul reiterated Singapore's strong support for the vision of two states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side and expressed the hope that all sides would make a concerted effort to achieve a substantive outcome at an international meeting hosted by the United States, expected by the end of the year.
The two ministers discussed other regional issues too, and reaffirmed the longstanding and multifaceted relationship between Israel and Singapore, according to a Foreign Affairs Ministry statement.
During his five-day trip, which is due to end tomorrow, Mr Zainul visited Jerusalem's Old City, including the Western Wall, and prayed at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, Islam's third-holiest shrine.
He also laid a wreath at Rabin's Square in Tel Aviv.
The square was erected in memory of prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, who was assassinated in 1995.
In addition, Mr Zainul met the mayor of Tel Aviv, Mr Ron Huldai, to exchange views on local development issues.
Today, he is due to visit Ramallah in the Palestinian Territories, where he will call on Prime Minister Salam Fayyad and meet other senior Palestinian officials.
