AN 82-YEAR-OLD Argentine woman, whose marriage to a 24- year-old man last month grabbed headlines worldwide, has died on her return from their honeymoon.

A BBC report said that Ms Adelfa Volpes died as a result of heart problems.

Ms Volpes was admitted to a hospital soon after she and her husband, Mr Reinaldo Waveqche, returned from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where they had gone for their honeymoon.

The report said she died in a sanatorium in Santa Fe, the city in northern Argentina where the couple were married on Sept 28.

'I don't want to resign myself to the idea that I lost her,' a disconsolate Mr Waveqche told EFE news agency.

Ms Volpes had rejected criticism over the age difference with the groom, who is the son of one of her best friends.

Their romance is said to have blossomed when Mr Waveqche went to live with her after his mother's death, when he was 15.

After their wedding, he had told reporters: 'I've always liked mature ladies.'

When reporters asked Ms Volpes if the marriage was purely spiritual, the new bride had laughed and replied: 'There is going to be more.'
