PETALING JAYA - A MINISTER repeated his call to the government to apologise to three judges sacked in the 1988 judicial crisis, two days after the Cabinet decided against it.
De facto law minister Zaid Ibrahim explained yesterday that his earlier call 'should not be construed as an attempt to embarrass anyone or even to undo former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's legacy'.
The judges were sacked in the 1980s when the latter clashed with the judiciary.
Datuk Zaid's suggestion drew criticism from the former premier.
Yesterday, Datuk Zaid defended his call.
'We should view this positively. Times have changed. The country has changed, we need to revitalise our institutions - the judiciary, legal service, police, Parliament and all the institutions,' he said.
'I think we must press on with this apology.'
