WHEN it comes to Ironman triathlons, half may be better than full.

Since its inception with 18 events in 2006, the Ironman 70.3 series has become the fastest growing triathlon series in the world, with 31 events this year and a world championship in Clearwater, Florida, in November.

The 1.9km swim, 90.1km cycle and 21.1km run races work out to a total of 113.1km or 70.3 miles, hence the name.
