Better security at bus interchanges

SINGAPORE is looking to buttress bus interchanges against car bombs with a high-tech system of sensors and automated concrete and steel barriers, officials revealed yesterday.

Government officials have been working with a private security company since September to develop the system, designed to stop explosive-laden vehicles in their tracks.

While Singapore has never been attacked by terrorists, bus terminals remain prime targets as a bombing could lead to mass casualties and cripple a public transport network which sees nearly nine million journeys a day.
