BANGKOK: Thailand's opposition Democrat Party sought an urgent parliamentary session yesterday, saying it was confident it had the numbers to form a new government.

In its petition to the Speaker of the House, it claimed to have the support of 260 MPs in the 480-seat legislature, and hopes to have party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, 44, chosen as Thailand's 27th prime minister.

'After talking to other parties, they will cooperate with us to form a new government,' Mr Abhisit told reporters yesterday.
