The million-dollar question this Chinese New Year is: Will film-maker Jack Neo's drawing power trump the combined star wattage of Singapore's best-known celeb pairing, Fann Wong and Christopher Lee?
Neo and co-director Gilbert Chan's Love Matters, a comedy about relationships at different stages of life, opens tomorrow, while director Ekachai Uekrongtham's The Wedding Game, about a celebrity wedding, opens on Sunday .
Neo, 48, has dominated the holiday box office for almost 10 years since his 1999 comedy Liang Po Po broke new ground for home-grown films. Last year, his loanshark comedy Ah Long Pte Ltd made $2.9 million while in 2007, Just Follow Law took in $2.8 million. In 2006, I Not Stupid Too earned $4.2 million.
